COMMUNITY GROUPS
Help Wanted: Managers
One of the most exciting parts of working at the Lesbian-Gay Community Service Center of Cleveland is the number of people calling who either want to be involved at the Center or want the Center to become involved in an actively they are undertaking. It is also, unfortunately, one of the most frustrating parts of working at the Center. There just aren't enough staff people to support the networking, coordinating, training and information-sharing tasks necessary to enable a large number of people to usefully contribute two to four hours of their time each week to advancing the Center's program. We need help.
The Center is now serving 1,500 to 2,000 people per month! These are people who are calling the Center, dropping
A youth services coordinator, to work with our summer interns to identify lesbiangay friendly people in all the Cleveland junior and senior high schools.
An AIDS Walk coordinator, to relieve Greg from overseeing food, decorations and entertainment at the September 25 AIDS Walk. This walk has the potential to raise all the funds the Center needs to support its Living Room program.
LESBIAN GAY
A women's outreach coordinator and an AfricanAmerican outreach coordinator, to help identify resources and develop programming specifically to meet the needs of these two communities within the broader lesbian-gay community.

in, or meeting in groups here. We provide support groups and hotline for lesbian, gay and for non-gay individuals who are HIVpositive. We train EMS and police recruits for the City of Cleveland. We run the only support groups for gay and lesbian youth in northeast Ohio. We do all this with an active volunteer base of about 150 people. Divide that by 4.5 full-time staff and that's 33 volunteers each.
The quickest solution would be for several kindly wealthy people to set up a million-dollar endowment fund for the Center at the Cleveland Foundation. Then we could hire the group facilitator, trainer, youth interns, public relations coordinator, outreach coordinator, receptionist and executive secretary we need, as well as add to our available office space, meeting space and provide a drop-in space with chairs.
But, until this miracle manifests itself, the next best solution is to locate some volunteers who are willing to be managers. We have lots of people who want to help. But we need some key people to organize these helpers so they are all working in a coordinated fashion on critical Center tasks.
Right now, we need:
A public relations coordinator, to oversee getting information about the Center out to both the lesbian-gay and non-gay communities and monitor lesbian-gay press exposure (such as why Stonewall 25, the largest lesbian-gay rights march in history was almost invisible in the Cleveland media)
OF GREATER CLEVELAND
A speaker's bureau coordinator, to develop an advertising campaign to let organizations know that we can provide speakers on homophobia.
If you can devote six to ten hours a week to a task, like calling people on the telephone, writing up minutes and attending a monthly volunteer manager's meeting—and want to make a significant difference for hundreds of lesbians and gays in Cleveland, call us.
Discriminated against? Tell us
The Center board of trustees resolved at its June 21 board meeting to initiate a service to document discrimination against, and within, our community, starting in July.
"If the lesbian-gay-bisexual community of Cleveland is to become a powerful advocate for equal rights," says Judith Rainbrook, executive director, "it can no longer tolerate unequal treatment of its members."
Any persons who feel they have suffered discrimination in the areas of housing, employment, recreation, or service, because they are lesbian, gay, or bisexual, are encouraged to call the Center's Hotline at 861-5454 between 3:00p.m. and 10 p.m. to report such an incident.
In addition, any persons who feel they have suffered discrimination from within the gay-lesbian-bisexual community because of their age, race, gender or physical disability are also encouraged to call the Center's hotline to report such an incident.
